What is Success by Rick White, President 180BIZ (Estimated Read Time 3 minutes 23 seconds)
Have you ever set yourself up for a goal? You get very excited about setting that goal and achieving it. But, when you finally reach it, what happens? You feel good for a couple of days, weeks, or months. Then all of a sudden you feel empty, you feel disappointed, and sometimes you get depressed. This is because we think on the other side of that goal is everything we ever wanted in life. Right? That life will be so much better.
I learned a long time ago that there is a science to success. A science to achievement. But there's an art to fulfillment. Let's talk that through. What I mean by “a science to success” is you follow a certain set of steps. If you do it the right way, you will achieve a certain result. That's what happens. And it's amazing, too. The mistake you make is you thought that you would feel better on the other side. You thought things would be different in your life. You thought you would feel different inside. Well, it doesn’t work that way.
Success is simply an achievement. We are goal-seeking missiles. We're designed that way. We are happiest not when we achieve the goal, but believe it or not, we're happiest and most stoked when we're actually going for the goal. It's the journey that gets us going.
Success is different things for different people. Success is being debt free to someone and could be having a million-dollar-a-year shop for another. I don't know what success is for you. I had one client that success to him was being able to fund mission trips. I think that's awesome. It is completely up to you. And don't let anybody ever diminish what you believe success is.
Success is an individual sport. What I see as success is different from someone else. That doesn't make it right or wrong. We are each unique individuals wanting and meeting different things in our lives. Please give each other the room.
I recently taught a class at ASTE and someone said they wanted to achieve a certain goal. Three of my clients in the room asked, “Why?” in unison. That's important. If you set a goal for yourself, if define success, make sure you understand why it's important to you. So, that's the first part.
The second part is fulfillment. The art of fulfillment. Everyone is different. Fulfillment is when you feel like you matter. It just feels warm and good inside and feels like you're making a difference. You are seeing something to fruition.
Fulfillment is a hard one to put your arms around. It's just that feeling of, “Wow, I matter. I made a difference.” Because isn't that what we all want is just to make a little bit of a difference every day? To know that when we get to the end of our lives the world is better off because we were in it?
Fulfillment has two parts to it. Its purpose and passion. Purpose is what you do for other people. It's what other people get.
Passion is what you get. For me, my purpose is to help as many shop owners as I possibly can recognize and build the business of their dreams.
My passion is how good it feels when I see someone get it. When you see someone all of a sudden go, “Oh!” All you need to do is figure out what you will give to others. And what lights you up? What's your purpose? What's your passion?
When you tie your goals to what you want to do, when you tie your goals to moving forward, to helping you achieve your purpose and fill your passion, that's what makes life worthwhile. And that's what's probably missing right now. You have the science of success down, not the art of fulfillment.
Thank you so much for listening. Have fun. Stay safe and go make some money.
