How to Deal with Someone Who Irks You in a Caring Way

by Rick White, President 180BIZ                                                      (Estimated Read Time 3 minutes)

I want to talk about issues today. Do you know how you have that team member who does something that gets under your skin? It’s someone who has a habit, a quirk and it upsets you.  I want to give you a strategy on how to deal with this in a very loving and caring way. Simply put, you need to decide whether this quirk is adversely affecting your business or their performance. If it is, then it's something you want to address.  You must decide if it does affect the business or their performance, or it doesn't.

If it doesn't, then let it go. If it doesn't, just accept it. That's just part of who they are, and that's okay. Sometimes I think people are put in our lives so that we can learn to accept differences and uniqueness in others, even when it goes against our grain. And that's a great lesson.

So now what if it does impact the business? What if it is hurting their performance? I'm going to give you a four-step process. Are you ready?

  1. Make them aware of it. You would be amazed at how many little idiosyncrasies we have, myself included, that we’re not even aware of. If I was aware of it, I think I would want to do something about it. But the first thing we must do is make them aware.
  2. Show them why it matters. If you don't show them why it matters, then it just feels like you're picking on them and that’s not cool. When you show them why it matters and the detriment that it's having and the positive that could happen with it gone, it will make all the difference in the world.
  3. Get their commitment. You must get their commitment that they'll make the change. You understand that you're not just hiring people to do something, you are there to help them become a better version of themselves. That's what leadership is all about. It's about seeing the potential in others and pulling it out of them. They'll likely stay on that same path if we're not doing that. Our job is to have an impact, a positive impact on people around us in a way so that they can look back and think that if it weren't for Rick, if it wasn't for Jason, if it wasn't for Wendy, I wouldn't be who I am or where I am today. That's the goal.
  4. Give them resources. Don't just make them aware and walk away. Don't say, stop doing this and walk away because you're not helping them replace a bad habit. You can't stop a habit; you must replace it. So, show them what to do instead. That'll make all the difference in the world.

Please share this video.  We have our Shop Owner’s Round Table, on the second Thursday of every month, 7 p.m. Eastern, and we would love you and your friends to drop by. Shop owners only. And then we have our upcoming Pocket Business Genius webinar on the second Thursday at 1 p.m. Eastern time.
