Auto Repair Shop Owners: How You Show Up Affects Your Team

How You Show Up Affects Your Team

by Rick White, President 180BIZ                                                            (Estimated Read Time 3 minutes)

Today’s episode is about showing up. How are you showing up every single day at your shop? When you are focused on lack, when you are focused on problems, and that's all you see, when you wake up and the first question you ask yourself is, What will go wrong today, you are in trouble. And I'll tell you why. That mindset is pushing your team away. It's because you're going in with a negative attitude and a hyper-awareness of what's going wrong. You're unconsciously looking for it And whatever you focus on, you get more of it.

People are looking for a coach and someone to mentor them.

Why is this a big deal?  You might ask, “Rick, we have to make sure everything is going okay.” You do, but there are two ways to do that. You can be in the back, sweeping up and fixing all the problems. You look for all the mistakes and all the problems and are completely focused on that which results in micro-managing and law enforcement. You focus on, “Hey, you didn't do this. Hey, you forgot this.  Hey, you did that.” That's not what they're looking for today. What people are looking for today is someone who will coach them.  They are looking for someone who will mentor them.  I want you to stop being a cop and start being a coach.

Steps to start being a coach.

How do we do this?

  1. Get clear on your goal and your destination. Share that with everyone and get them excited about it.
  2. Communicate how they help us do it. Once we show them how they contribute, work together to determine the best way to do it.
  3. From there, we take action, monitor, measure, and then give feedback. Hold people accountable.

Hold your staff accountable and to a higher standard.

Once you start from that perspective, you're no longer in the back, pushing your team, which is frustrating, and disappointing. You don't want that in your life. You want to watch your team thrive. You want to grow a team that runs without you. You can't do that when you're pushing them. You can't do that when you're in the back catching everything that goes wrong. When you're in the back looking for everything problems, people are less careful because you will catch it.  Hold your people to a higher standard. Make that standard a demand, lovingly, no matter what, and then help them step up to it. That's what a coach does.  A coach will see the potential. A coach believes in them, encourages them, pushes them, challenges them, and a coach gives them feedback. Stop being the cop. Start being a coach.

Focus on potential.

Now, our minds are tainted negatively. When you're focused on problems, you start looking for more of them. I don't want you to do that anymore. Yes, deal with the situation when it comes up. But don't go looking for problems. They're going to come up all by themselves. Focus on potential. Focus on growth. Focus on challenge. Stop being the cop and start being a coach. That will make all the difference in your team. It will build them up. You might ask, “But Rick, what if I got a guy that just doesn't care?” Then he doesn't belong there. You've known it for a long time. Do something about it. Make changes. Changes are good. Don't put up with sub-par performance or subpar behavior. If you want your team to be potential-oriented, you must be potential-oriented. It means knowing where you're going, how they help you get there, and getting them on board It means working together to build a plan, and then moving forward.
