Auto Repair Shop Owners: Taking Care of Yourself is a MUST!

Taking Care of Yourself is a MUST!

by Rick White, President 180BIZ                                                      (Estimated Read Time 5 minutes)

I want to talk about something that gets lost in many different places in business and is very scary. When I meet shop owners a lot of times, not all the time, they're so focused on the business and not failing that it consumes them. And when that happens, their only thought is, “I got to get to my family. My wife's going to leave me. My kids aren't going to love me anymore.” This is a real issue and so many of us have pain involved with it. Yes, you have your business, you have your family, and that is important. But both derive their energy from you.

Taking care of yourself is a MUST!

The one thing that you are forgetting in this equation of business is you are not remembering yourself. I mean that you must have the energy to deal with the business. You must have the energy to deal with your family. You must have the energy to show up every day with a smile. If you don't take care of yourself, you are not going to be there for the business or your family. This is integral and so important. When I start talking to shop owners about this, they say that they feel selfish about having this conversation. But taking care of yourself is one of the kindest things that you can do for your family. Taking care of yourself is one of the most creative things you can do for your business.

When was the last time you filled your cup? So how do you do that? There are three ways.

REST is the first “must” to take care of yourself.

  1. REST. You must make sure you're getting enough sleep. When you rest, your brain turns short-term memory into long-term memory. Often when you don't remember stuff, it's because you're not rested. With me, I had a problem toward the end of last year when I was struggling and it turned out that I have sleep apnea. I stopped breathing 38 times an hour. I now have a Darth Vader machine, and it has changed my life. It is amazing how much better I am throughout the day because I have rested. That's the first thing you must do for yourself.

RECHARGING is the best way to avoid feeling run down.

  1. RECHARGE. You are in a high erosion profession, my friends. When you own your own business, if you don't recharge, you will run your batteries down. You will run out of juice. There are just a few areas. It's physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually. Those are the four areas that you need to recharge with. Think about that for a second. If you're like me, we're good at recharging in one area and we neglect another. For your cup to be full, you need to dedicate some amount of time, effort, and energy toward all four areas. Look at it physically, what are we doing? That's an area that I've let slide. I'm working on it. Mentally, I do pretty well with mentally and spiritually. I do pretty well emotionally. That's another area I'm working on too. Look at what you need to recharge with each area so that you can show up creatively, energetically, and positively focused with a great mindset. Because if you don't rest and if you don't recharge, you can't do the third thing, which is reset.

RESETTING WILL REDUCE YOUR BAGGAGE.

  1. RESET. You must be able to reset. If you don't reset, you're going to drag yesterday into today. That is what we call baggage. At night before you go to bed learn and let it go. Learn the lessons of the day and then let them go. Then get up in the morning and start with gratitude and prayer, in my opinion. I think of five things I'm grateful for. Every morning, I say a little prayer and then be focused on where I’m going. That is how you do a reset. Remember where you're going, why you're going there, and then lastly, how you're getting there.

It will be easier to remember where you're going, why you're going there, and how you're getting there when you can REST, RECHARGE, and RESET. So, this is a big deal. I want you every morning, every day, rest, recharge, reset. That is a “must do” to show up at your best every single day. REST, RECHARGE, and REST.
