Auto Repair Shop Owners: What's Preventing Your Unstoppable Momentum?
What's Preventing Your Unstoppable Momentum?
by Rick White, President 180BIZ (Estimated Read Time 5 minutes)
I want to talk to you about a thing that's probably causing you a fair amount of frustration. You're looking for that grand gesture. You’re looking for that one thing to make all the difference in the world. It will change everything for you. Or you're looking for things to go your way. You're waiting for things to happen. You're looking for that easy win or the golden ring. But that’s not real. That just is not real. Why do I say that? Because that's not how success is achieved.
I want to share the concept of stacking with you today. The reality is you are stacking days. If you have days that are not great, and you stack one on top of the other where you are either negative or ambivalent or have a level of apathy and you just don't care or you're giving up. When you keep stacking those days, that stacking creates a result. That stacking builds momentum.
Success is cumulative.
Success is cumulative. Success is repetitive. Success is not like, “Boom! Here I am.” Success is doing things over and over and over again. We've been doing these JUST ONE THING videos now for I think eight years. I figure over 52 weeks a year over eight years, that's over 400 videos. I do it repeatedly. Why? Because I want to stack. I know it's hard, but everything you want is on the other side of hard. Dreaming big is hard. Overcoming fear is hard. Doing something new is hard. Allowing yourself to make mistakes is hard. Doing the same thing every day is hard.
Everything we want is on the other side of hard.
Everything we want is on the other side of hard and you don't jump over that. You create steps. You stack. Some people that will give you a hard time. But never has there been a statue of a critic made. There are people everywhere who have something to say about what I do or how I do it. But I'm going to tell you this right now. I'm on the field. I'm getting dirty. I'm getting bloodied. I'm doing the work. You are too. Don't let someone sitting in the stands tell you what the best thing is to do. If they're not on the field, I don't want to hear it.
You are stacking every day now. You're either stacking ambivalence and negativity, or you're stacking bad habits. Stacking really begins with your routines and habits. For example, if I go to Dunking Donuts every day, over time it will erode my health. That's stacking. It’s the same thing with positive stacking. If I start to exercise more, and I do it every single day. It will have a positive impact on my health.
The first step is to recognize what you are stacking.
Recognize what you have been stacking. That's the first step here. Have you been stacking positive? Have you been stacking ambivalence? Or have you been stacking negativity, failure, doubt, and fear? These are all things that we're stacking every single day. What have you been stacking? The reality is most of our lives are on autopilot. We're not actively engaged. We have habits and routines, and they're getting us an outcome, and over time, that outcome stacks and gets us to our current location. Your location is simply where you are. It does not and should not be your destination.
Start with a dream and make it a big dream.
You must start with a dream and a big dream. I want to make the world a better place, one shop at a time. That is my life mission. You must start with a dream and understand why it's important. I watched my dad struggle for years. I struggled for years. And then I figured out what I was doing wrong. Let’s face it. We can stack positive in one area and negative in another. I work very hard at honing my skills as a coach and becoming better at helping people, but I've been stacking health negatively. I haven't been taking care of myself the way I should. That's going to stop right now.
Sometimes our relationships go into the backseat because we start stacking. We're paying all of our attention stacking over here. We're stacking negative over there. You must see the areas you need to work on. Start with a dream and then understand why it's important. Then you create a plan, take massive action, and do it repeatedly. You step back and debrief, and you modify, and you just keep getting better at doing things.
There’s no such thing as perfect.
I know these videos are never perfect. There's no such thing as a perfect video. But the fact is, I'm a lot more comfortable doing them today than I was eight years ago. I was honestly deathly afraid of being in front of a camera. I was filled with fear and doubt. But I got through it and am much better off now.
It’s never too late to make a change.
So here's my question to you. Are you stacking days of failure? Are you stacking days of mediocrity? Are you stacking days of success and vibrancy? What have you been stacking? What are you going to change? Don't ever say it's too late. That's a lie. You decide. You set the direction with your dream and then you step toward it. Yes, you're going to have to make all kinds of adjustments and modifications and get better at it, but understand again, that your location is simply where you are. It is not your destination unless you stay there. You can change it anytime by simply changing your direction, and you do that by what you stack every single day.
