Auto Repair Shop Owners: What's Your Identity?

Whats Your Identity?

by Rick White, President 180BIZ                                                            (Estimated Read Time 4 minutes)

I want to talk about identity today, which is super important. There are three different identities that I want you to think about.

Three identities.

  1. Complainer. How many people do you know in your life who love to complain? They find something wrong with everything. It doesn't matter. The problem with that is that it doesn't get anything done. Does it? When you're complaining, you're playing the victim.  You can't grow your business by complaining.
  2. Critic. This is where you're kicking the crap out of everyone.  Think about those people in your life where you are busy doing something and they're telling you it's never going to work. You know what I say to those people? Get out of my way. I have someplace to go. You can't grow your business by criticizing.
  3. Creator. You can be a creator, a critic, or a complainer. Which of these three are you going to be? If I'm a creator, this is where I work on getting better. This is where I work on learning to control myself. This is where I can learn to influence more persuasively. That's what I believe life is about. I can also help and serve.

Everything happens for us.

You can't create the life you want by complaining. Are you complaining? Are you playing the victim? Are things happening to you or are you looking for the lesson? Complaining is where you roll over and die because you're complaining about everything going wrong. It's not going the way you want it to go. Well, I have news for you. I have been so disappointed by the way I thought things should go and the way they did go. But it doesn't have to be that way. The reality is everything happens for us. That's my core belief. Everything happens for us.

There's a lesson in it and a reason for it. There's a lesson in it and a purpose behind it. Are you a complainer? Are you shaking your fist and saying that's not fair, or are you a critic looking at what everyone else is doing and trying to manage their lives instead of managing your own?

Are you whining or winning?

Are you whining or are you winning? Do you want to be a creator and do something amazing? Are you going to get knocked down? You betcha. Is it going to hurt sometimes? You betcha. Is it going to be discouraging sometimes? You betcha. But you know something? There will be nothing more rewarding than being a creator.

What room will you live in today?

Here's the head fake I want to give you, these aren't identities. You are so much more than any one or all of these three things. They are rooms you live in. Think about that for one second. They are rooms you live in. Sometimes we get stuck in a room and we're not aware of it. I'm guilty of that too. Sometimes I get angry and bitter about things because I have this unconscious blueprint about how I expect things to go. When they don't go that way, what do I end up doing? I end up criticizing and complaining. But these are rooms that you live in. These are not who you are. You decide who you are. If you don't, you let circumstances, events, and other people's situations decide what room will be in. And it doesn't have to be that way.
