The Dangers of Worry that Every Auto Repair Shop Owner Should Know

The Five Dangers of Worry

In this episode, I’ll talk to you about the danger, the danger of worry, and the byproduct of worry you've probably never thought of.

Danger #1: Worry Kills Productivity

Worry kills productivity. When you start to worry, you take your eye off where you're going. Worry kills focus. Worry kills momentum. When you start worrying, you're no longer moving forward. You're stuck. You're stuck staring at something else. Worry causes decreased productivity because when you lose focus on where you are going, your team loses focus on where they're going. I have a client who last year really struggled. He struggled with motivation. Because of that, he struggled the entire year. Now, this year because of his focus, his shop did 25% of last year's sales in just two months. Think about that for a second. Is that an exciting start to a year or what? Decreased productivity is a byproduct and a danger of worrying.

Danger #2: Worry infects employee morale

Worry infects employee morale. You end up in a situation where your team starts to worry. If you are worried about something, they're consumed by it. When one person worries, another worries, and then another. They think that something must be wrong. Then fear stacking sets in. “I won’t get paid. I won’t be able to pay my bills. I'm going to lose my job.” And it gets worse and worse. Contaminated focus is contagious.

Danger #3: Worry ruins the client’s experience

Worry hurts the client's experience. You're not focused on service. You're not focused on providing an amazing experience. All you're focused on is the worry, and in the process of doing that, it causes your world to end at the tip of your nose.  You don't see other people. You don't see their issues. You can't be a solutions provider when you are worrying. It's not possible.

Danger #4: Worry damages your finances

Worry damages your finances. You cannot grow from a place of fear and worry. I don't care how hard you push mentally, intellectually saying, “I can do this.” If your heart is focused on worry and fear you can't have growth. It's not possible.

So from a business perspective, worry hurts productivity, it hurts employee morale, it hurts your client experience, and it kills your finances.

Danger #5: Worry hurts your health

Here's the fifth and probably the most important. Worry hurts your health. When you worry for an extended period of time,  your body's expecting a fight. It's expecting something bad. Then adrenaline and cortisol go up inside your body, and for a short term, that's good because it gets you ready whether you fight or run.   But over an extended period of time, you will end up with health problems. You’ll perhaps overeat, or develop high blood pressure. Basically, worry for an extended period of time will show you a weak spot in your health.

Let’s kick worry to the curb

These five things are the byproduct of worry that you don't ever think of. In my Inner Circle groups, we have a theme for this year, which is “No Shop Left Behind. “ Honestly, if we're completely open and authentic and vulnerable, most of you are operating from a place of fear. So I'll ask you, What are you worried about? Let's bring worry out into the open and then kick it to the curb. Get focused on where you really want to go this year. The more focused you are, the more intentional you'll be with your actions and the closer will get to your dreams.
