Auto Repair Shop Owners Create Safety for Their Team
Safety by Rick White, President 180BIZ
What I will talk about is the uncertainty that's going on in the world. It's everywhere. It's almost like the world has said, “Oh, you can handle the pandemic? Here, take Ukraine! Here, take Russia! Here, take part shortages! Here, take supply shortages! Here, take inflation!” And it's just mounting and mounting and mounting and people need a break. People need a place where there's safety. If you look at one of Maslow’s first levels, it's about safety.
Now the reality is we go looking for safety in the wrong places. We look for safety with money. We look for safety, with things. We look for safety with drinking or different things that just quiet us down on the inside. I would like you as a leader to create a safe place. I want you to create a safe place for your people, for your team. I want you to create a safe place for your community. When you become a safe place, you attract other people because this is an inherent need that we all have and so few get.
I will give you the three components of safety that will make all the difference in the world.
- CARING. People aren't going to feel safe until they know that you care about them until you put them first until you know what they're looking for, what they need, and you find a way to give it to them so that they know you have their back. So, the first thing you must have is caring.
- The second thing you must have is CERTAINTY. It's easy to get stuck in the thought of, “Oh my gosh, we're all going to hell in a handbasket. It will be this way forever and ever, and ever.” But the reality is that there is a season to everything. In fact, one of the greatest lessons I ever learned is when you're in the summertime and things are going really well think winter. Because it's coming. We know summer, fall, and winter. But then the next thing that I learned was when you're in winter, think summer. So, you must understand the certainty. It's going to be okay. Yes. Gas is expensive right now. It's going to be okay; we will get through this. We will get on the other side of it. It's going to be okay.
So certainty is the second component that you need to bring as a leader to create that safe environment. So now we have caring, and you are certain. You’re clear on what things are happening. You're very certain about where things are going. You have faith that things are going to be okay. We've been through worse. And for some of us that have been around for a while, we know that to be true. We're at 8.6% inflation. And it sucks. I can remember the late seventies, and early eighties when it was in 21% interest. So, this too shall pass. The only thing that's certain is change. Things will never stay the same. So caring and certainty are the first two components. - The last component of safety is CONSISTENCY. It has to be a consistent experience. You have to show up as a leader the same way. I understand we're human beings and there are things that we do differently. But the people must know that they can count on you. They need to get a consistent experience. They need a consistent message. They must get these things that will make them feel good. That's why it's so important to have the right energy and the right message and the right belief system so that you can show up authentically. But at the same time consistently. Nothing screws people up more than inconsistency. Like when it's like good one day and bad the next. They won’t know which one is real. The reality is it's never going to be the same all the way. It's not linear. But just be your best at these three things and watch the magic that happens.
God, bless stay safe, have some fun, and go make some money.
